Nighthawks at the Diner:
Wong Kar-Wai’s My Blueberry Nights

ASBJØRN GRØNSTAD

Abstract

This essay introduces the concept of cinekphrasis to describe an intertextual mobilization by which static, singular images are conceptually re-animated as moving images. Drawing upon Wong Kar-wai’s 2007 film My Blueberry Nights as a prime example, the essay considers the importance of symbolic landscapes in conveying distinct cultural sensibilities. This transtextual reading of My Blueberry Nights identifies several tropes and themes that recur throughout the director’s work, while at the same time also situating the film within the context of the Euro-American road movie.

Keywords: Wong Kar-wai, cinema and landcape, art cinema, intertextuality, diner, road movie, cinekphrasis
